The Glendower Group completed the construction of Wilmont Crossing in 2013; the gateway to the revitalized West Rock Community. The redevelopment effort consisted of demolition of a strip mall and replacement with modern, energy-efficient housing units. The development includes a 60,000 square-foot, 47-unit apartment building for seniors and people with disabilities. On the building’s ground floor there is 9,800 square feet of commercial space and currently includes a walk-in medical clinic and a neighborhood convenience store.
Work began on the site, located at the corner of Wilmot Road and Brookside Avenue, in late 2011. Prior to its purchase, it had been home to a convenience store and several church organizations. But over time the lot had become a de facto dumping ground. “We were quite invested in this community. Something needed to happen here,” Karen DuBois-Walton, Executive Director of the Housing Authority of New Haven said. And that something was the creation of 47 beautiful units of senior housing set atop 9,800 square feet of new commercial retail space.
“This is now a beautiful thread in the fabric of the city,” said Jennifer Gottlieb, program center coordinator for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Hartford office.
